TX Eligibility

Enrollment of students shall be open to persons who reside legally within the State of Texas and meet the criteria below as required by Senate Bill 15:

  1. During the prior school year:
    1. Attended school and spent 50% or more of the year learning in person; or
    2. Attended private school, homeschool, or out-of-state school virtually for 50% or more of the year, with the following two items being true–
      1. had fewer than 10% unexcused absences in total for all instructional methods offered, i.e., on-campus, remote synchronous and remote asynchronous,
      2. earned a C or higher in each of the foundation curriculum courses under TEC, §28.002, (i.e., mathematics, science, English language arts and reading, and social studies) taken virtually or remotely during the preceding school year; or
    3. Attended a Texas public ISD or public charter school and spent 50% or more of the year learning online / remote / at a distance, with the following three items being true–
      1. had fewer than 10% unexcused absences in total for all instructional methods offered, i.e., on-campus, remote synchronous and remote asynchronous,
      2. earned a C or higher in each of the foundation curriculum courses under TEC, §28.002, (i.e., mathematics, science, English language arts and reading, and social studies) taken virtually or remotely during the preceding school year, and
      3. achieved satisfactory performance or higher on each STAAR assessment taken (applicable to students currently in grades 4-8 only).  
        1. Students who did not take their grade-level STAAR exams will need to take and pass MAP tests to be considered eligible. 
  2. During the time enrolled at Great Hearts Online: 
    1. Maintain fewer than ten (10) unexcused absences while enrolled in remote instruction over a 6-month period. Students who have ten or more unexcused absences during remote instruction are subject to withdrawal from Great Hearts Online.

In-Person State Testing Requirements:  All 2nd – 8th grade must students participate in state-requirement in-person testing which occurs in the spring. Families living outside of the Dallas/Fort Worth and San Antonio metropolitan areas will have venue options available to them within a 75-mile radius.

Additional eligibility requirements set by Great Hearts Online:

  1. access to high speed internet,
  2. a helpful adult at home to support student learning, and
  3. a laptop with a built-in or external web camera.
    1. For families who do not have access to a laptop, meet the Free and Reduced Lunch (FRL) income parameters, and complete the FRL form, a laptop will be provided.
